Interkosmos laser satellite rangefinder
Abstract
A laser satellite rangefinder, with the capability of measuring distances up to 3,000 km with an accuracy to plus or minus 5 m was developed. The instrument includes: a pointing mechanism, photoelectric detector, time interval counter and a standard time service system. Five copies of this instrument have already been fabricated and are now operating at the artificial earth satellite stations in Poland, Egypt, Bolivia, India, and Cuba. The laser satellite rangefinders make it possible to measure the earth's diameter in a direction from north to south as well as the equatorial diameter.
