Precursor phenomena ahead of a shock wave in argon
Abstract
Precursor ionization ahead of a shock wave in argon at 1 torr was studied over a shock velocity range of 6 to 8.5 km/s. Radiative processes are considered, expressions for photoexcitation and photoionization rates are introduced, and processes involving collisions are surveyed. It is shown that collisional processes as well as radiative processes must be taken into account in order to obtain agreement between experimental and theoretical results for the kinetics of argon ionization and excitation.
