Measurement of displacements around crack tips
Abstract
The paper deals with two optical arrangements devised for measuring displacement patterns around crack tips. Some experimental data obtained with these systems are examined, showing that Young's fringes produced by doubly exposed speckle patterns can be used to study crack tip displacements over fairly small areas, and that the displacements follow the Westergaard approximation, within the experimental scatter. The stress intensity factors obtained from the displacements were in good agreement with the collocation values.
