Design, test and evaluation of refractory MHD electrodes
Abstract
The paper summarizes the engineering methodology employed in the design, test and evaluation of selected candidate U-02 Phase III (in the US-USSR Cooperative Program on MHD) electrode systems. The paper also identifies a number of areas which must involve further advances to ensure the continuing development of refractory electrode systems for application in MHD generators. The discussion covers candidate electrode systems for the U-02 Phase III Module Test; electrode system design and analysis, with thermal gradient plots, displacement plots, and stress intensity plots; and summary of test results. The experience gained from the ongoing studies confirm the value of coordinated engineering design, test and post-test evaluation techniques necessary for the development of refractory electrode/insulator systems for use in MHD generators.
