Structural and magnetic transformations in narrow-band semiconductors and semimetals
Abstract
The present analysis deals with structural transformations in group IV-VI semiconductors. A theory of structural phase transformation is developed in a self-consistent field approximation, and a relationship is established between the type of crystal structure occurring in IV-VI semiconductors and the general topology of their electron spectrum in the 'high-temperature' cubic phase. The problem of the influence of collective oscillations (of phonons) on the nature of structural phase transition is examined. A theory of ferromagnetic ordering of band electrons in systems that are unstable with respect to electron-hole pairing is proposed.
