Optical image enhancement and image restoration
Abstract
A survey of optical image processing and image restoration is presented with reference to several applications. A model for the observed image is given and the primary aspects of optical filtering, detection, and estimation are discussed. The fabrication of optical filters used in image processing systems is outlined, noting the filters' amplitude and phase components. The design of optical processors is described in terms of a coherent optical processor system, coherent optical correlators, hybrid digital-optical processors, and partially coherent optical processor systems. Consideration is given to applications including image processing using blocking filters, the enhancement of low-contrast imagery, in-line image restoration, and the removal of periodic raster line patterns in scanned imagery.
