High-temperature oxidizer preheater
Abstract
Combustion air preheating in open-cycle fossil-fuel MHD energy conversion systems can be accomplished through the use of directly or indirectly fired heaters. Preheater subsystems are discussed relative to types of preheaters, system requirements and controls, and materials requirements. The design elements of high-temperature preheater subsystems are described, including analysis and design of regenerators of different types, and air preheaters under development in the United States and the Soviet Union. Experimental results for directly and indirectly fired regenerators as well as for directly-fired recuperators are summarized.
