Ordering of atomic energy levels in excited states
Abstract
A consistent odering of excited atomic states with the quantity k = n + 1, for small values of the orbital angular momentum 1, pointed out by Sternheimer is examined. The ordering is interpreted in terms of the variation of the quantum defects with 1. The simple rules for the k ordering are given. The reasons for the observed variation of the quantum defects are understood in terms of the accumulation of zero energy scattering phase shifts with 1 and with zeta, as calculated from a realistic atomic potential.
