8-PSK modulation of a microwave carrier
Abstract
Development of digital microwave radios has required new methods of modulation to obtain high spectral efficiency. This paper describes an 8-PSK modulator which directly modulates a 6 GHz carrier. Three PIN diodes mounted in a waveguide structure form a reflection type phase shifter. The modulator has a phase switching transition time of less than 2 nanoseconds and maintains good phase accuracy over extreme environmental conditions. Overall performance meets system requirements and has certain systems advantages that make it superior to other 8-PSK modulation schemes.
