Position Sensitive Detectors in X-Ray Astronomy
Abstract
Both one- and two-dimensional detectors have been used in X-ray astronomy. These applications are reviewed. Gas-proportional counters having positional resolution of better than one millimeter are described, and the factors which limit the resolution are discussed. Channel-plate electron multipliers are being developed for use in conjunction with X-ray and extreme-ultraviolet telescopes. The properties of these detectors and their readout systems are reviewed.
