Compressed-gas lasers
Abstract
Results are reviewed for experimental and theoretical studies of high-power pinched-gas lasers. The electron-ionization excitation method is examined along with intense-electron-beam pumping. Experimental data are presented on the threshold and output characteristics, efficiencies, and gains of CO2 and CO lasers that operate without cooling of the active medium. Prospects for applying the electron-ionization method to drive electronic-transition lasers are evaluated. Results are also given for experimental studies of electron-beam-pumped pinched-xenon and Ar:N2 lasers with lasing in Xe2 and N2 molecular electronic transitions. Perspectives are discussed for using pinched-gas lasers in thermonuclear fusion, in the processing industry, and for selective stimulation of certain chemical reactions.
