The DITE Phase II neutral injection system
Abstract
The DITE Phase II neutral injection system which utilizes a high efficiency plasma source to illuminate a three electrode extraction system operating at 30 kV is discussed. The system consists of two beam lines, each with two ion sources, providing total power of 1.2 MW at 30 kV for 50 ms. Novel plasma sources are developed from the picket fence magnetic buckets as low noise plasma systems, with measurements of the plasma density profile showing uniformity of better than 10 percent in both directions across the extraction plane. The beam line, power supplies, plasma source, and current extraction are described. Source efficiency, beam divergence, and beam line details are discussed, and it is concluded that the performance of the prototype test line shows that the Phase II line should achieve its design performance of 1.2 MW.
