CW optically pumped molecular iodine laser
Abstract
Laser oscillation on several molecular iodine transitions is observed. The unique feature of this laser is that it is excited by a CW optical pump, a single longitudinal mode Ar(+) laser, and that it exhibits CW oscillation on more than 100 individually selectable transitions spanning more than one octave from 0.57 to 1.35 microns. The characteristics of the molecular-iodine laser are defined. Optimum gain, pump threshold, and photon conversion efficiency - respectively 0.004/cm, 4 mW, and 10% - are obtained for laser transitions near 1.3 microns.
