ERDSAT - A satellite concept for earth observations with combined optical and microwave payload
Abstract
The paper presents a conceptual analysis of Erdsat, the proposed European remote sensing satellite to be launched by Ariane. The payload will consist of a synthetic aperture radar and an optical multispectral scanner with nine channels for land applications or coastal zone missions. The mission goal of Erdsat is based on European user requirements, where there is a strong need for optical and microwave sensor operation aboard the same satellite in simultaneous or sequential mode. The proposed spacecraft is three-axis-stabilized and will have a sun-synchronous near-polar circular orbit at 750 km. The Erdsat program is scheduled to start in late 1980 and the launch is tentatively scheduled for the end of 1985.
