Automatic materials processing laboratory on a palette
Abstract
The paper discusses briefly some problems associated with the design of automatic palette-mounted laboratories for space. The general concept of a system for automatic specimen changing is presented, with suggestions for the specimen magazine, transfer unit, and sealing considerations. Principles of thermal control of specimens and equipment are proposed. A list of the components of the two current projects TEXUS and the materials processing laboratory is provided. The layout for a palette payload consisting of automatic materials processing experiments is shown.
