Remarks on the theory of viscous flows
Abstract
By means of the differential and difference formulations of the conservation equations, some of the causes for the difficulties in obtaining solutions to three-dimensional problems of viscous flow are examined. It is shown how consistent difference formulations, numerical stability limits, resolution requirements and accuracy requirements limit the convergence speed of the algorithms and increase the memory capacity needed for solution. The current status of viscous research is discussed with the example of viscous transonic lifting surface flow and the flow in a ball slot in mind.
