Inmarsat - The International Maritime Satellite Organization: Its genesis, development and status
Abstract
The International Maritime Satellite System (Inmarsat), intended to provide maritime communications service on a 24-hour per day basis between the latitudes of 70 deg N and 70 deg S, is discussed. Among the preliminary studies undertaken for Inmarsat were a survey of ship terminal costs, definition of the operational requirements of the satellites, and a consideration of the administrative, financial and legal aspects of the system. Establishment of telephony charges for the system is also considered. At present the instruments putting Inmarsat into effect are being reviewed for signing, and preparatory study committees have been formed.
