On the unidentified high-latitude X-ray sources.
Abstract
Reasons for the persistent residue of unidentified X-ray sources at absolute values of galactic latitude greater than 20 deg in the 2A and 4U catalogs are discussed. It is suggested that the unidentified high-latitude sources may be partly explained by undersized error boxes and that the nearly isotropic distribution of the unidentified sources is consistent with either an extragalactic population or a near-sun population of stars. Some identifications of X-ray or EUV sources with local galactic objects and systems are reviewed, together with possible identifications of high-latitude X-ray sources with stars of large proper motion.
