Application of orthogonal perturbation sequences to adaptive beamforming
Abstract
The paper deals with the problem of adjusting the weights of an N-element array so as to minimize the mean power while maintaining a nonzero response in a specified direction. The technique considered involves the application of simultaneous orthogonal perturbation sequences to the array weights followed by the correlation of the array output power sequence with the perturbation sequences to yield an estimate of the desired gradient from signals. Properties of the perturbation sequences are defined and a method is described for constructing binary valued sequences with the required properties. Analysis of the behavior of an adaptive beamforming algorithm that uses the estimated gradient is also included in the paper.
