Some aspects of contoured beam antennas
Abstract
Design of a contoured beam reflector antenna is described. The radiation patterns of a defocused symmetrical paraboloidal reflector antenna are studied, along with an offset paraboloid with a circular aperture and the excitation coefficients of the feeds. Normalized power distributions over Great Britain - Ireland are shown, using a symmetric parabolic antenna with a reflector diameter of 2.5 and 4.5 m and an offset parabolic antenna with a reflector diameter of 4.5 m. A contoured beam antenna with a diameter of 10 m has been designed for the Benelux. Contoured beam antennas are compared with conventional antennas noting that well designed contoured beam antennas with reflectors offer the possibility to distribute large parts of the transmitted power equally over arbitrary areas.
