The effect of heat exchanges on the solidification rate in a thermal gradient furnace
Abstract
A thermal model is established that can be used to predict how the rate of a solidification interface varies in time according to the geometrical and thermal conditions governing the system. The effect of natural convection in the space between the furnace and the crucible on the characteristic time for the establishment of steady state velocity conditions is emphasized. The model is applied to the results of space experiments. Two examples are given where the lack of steady state conditions for the solidification rate has an effect on the solidification process: redistribution of the solute in nonsteady state single phase solidification, and regular eutectic solidification.
