Forcefree state of an electron beam
Abstract
A theoretical analysis is presented of the steady state of a relativistic electron beam in an ionized gas with a Boltzmanndistributed ion density in the case of forcefree motion of the beam. The radial potential distribution of the beam is determined. It is found that, for sufficiently long beams which allow electrons as well as ions to be described in the approximation of a statistically ideal gas, there is no inertial system of coordinates where the gas would be uncharged, i.e., an exact compensation of electrostatic repulsion by magnetic compression is impossible.
