Adaptive equalization of delay distorted signals
Abstract
The equalization of delay distorted signals through the use of transversal filters is discussed. The advantages and disadvantages of FIR (finite impulse response) and IIR (infinite impulse response) filters are described. A combined FIR/IIR filter which contains the advantages of both filters is described. The problem of adaptive equalization of time variable transmission channels including unkown transmission signals is discussed. The necessary minimum filter length for practical applications is reported. The transient behavior of the filter parameters is computed. A comparison of the theoretical results with the measured transient behavior of an actual filter and with a computer simulated filter is presented.
