Large deflection analysis of portal frames
Abstract
A numerical method is described for the second order, in-plane analysis of portal-type, steel, industrial frames accounting for both non-linear geometrical and material responses. Although primarily designed for determining the ultimate strength of frames, the same method can be used to predict the critical elastic frame buckling loads for any axial load configuration. Comparisons with results from tests on frames have confirmed the accuracy of the method. The method is well suited to minicomputer application as it is simple and makes no great demands on storage, the most complex operation being the inversion of 3x3 array.
