Very long baseline radio interferometry using a geostationary satellite. A mission definition study
Abstract
The application of a geostationary satellite in Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) is proposed. The rationale and the methodology of the development of a satellite-linked VLBI system in Europe is discussed. Scientific objectives of VLBI in the fields of astrophysics, geophysics, and astrometry are presented. The space segment, including use of satellite link 1-clock synchronization and use of satellite link 2-wideband signal transmission, is dealt with. Ground segment elements discussed include radio observatories, ground stations, water vapor radiometry, data processing center for a European VLBI system and off-line software.
