Linear transformation of waves in the ionosphere and the generation of ion whistlers
Abstract
The WKB method is used to study the linear interaction of normal waves in an inhomogeneous magnetoplasma for the case when the refractive indices of the two waves approach the same value and intersect in the limiting case. Consideration is given to the two cases of nonabsorbing and absorbing plasmas. The results obtained, which agree well with numerical computations can be conveniently applied to the generation of ion whistlers in the ionosphere.
