Absorption of electromagnetic-wave energy in a randomly inhomogeneous collisionless plasma at plasma-resonance frequencies
Abstract
An expression is obtained for the effective permittivity tensor at resonant frequencies of a randomly inhomogeneous magnetoplasma with weak small-scale fluctuations of electron density. The anti-Hermitian part of the tensor determines wave-energy losses associated with the excitation of an extraordinary wave under conditions when the refractive coefficient of wave may be infinite. The energy transformation process occurs as a result of the interaction of normal waves conditioned by electron-density fluctuations. Anomalous absorption occurs in the plasma under conditions of resonant scattering. This absorption mechanism may be of interest in the heating of plasma up to fusion temperatures.
