Laser Doppler velocimeter
Abstract
The paper describes a Doppler velocimeter using a giant-pulse 1.315-micron C3F7I laser. A Fabry-Perot interferometer is used to record scattered-light spectrograms. Short pulses with narrow spectral lines have permitted the measurement of velocities of the order of 30-2000 m/sec with an error of 1 percent at exposures of .00000005 sec. The instrument was used to measure the velocity of metal plates scattered by an exploding foil.
