Nonlinear wave amplification in a beamplasma system
Abstract
Consideration is given to the nonlinear amplification of longitudinal waves excited in the resonant region. The study is based on a system of multiplefluid equations and Maxwell equations. It is found that in the resonant region, nonlinear wave amplification has an explosive nature. Nonlinear amplification increases as the resonant region is approached. The characteristic length of the wave amplification is comparable to the inverse linear amplification coefficient and the phase velocity of the perturbations of highfrequency waves. Thus nonlinear wave processes are significant in the relaxation of fast electron beams in plasmas.
