Particle motion in a turbulent fluid
Abstract
A new type of apparatus was developed for use in the study of particle motion in turbulent fluids which permits observation of particle movement unencumbered by average fluid motion. Measurement of deflection permitted the force on each rake to be calculated, from which the rate at which energy was dissipated by the fluid was computed. This device was used to investigate motion of particles, whose size was between the turbulent micro-scale and integral scale, in a turbulent fluid. Particle motion was compared with fluid motion using a streak photograph technique to determine how well particles could follow fluid motion. It was concluded that particle motion, driven by fluid motion, had dependent diffusivity but independent direction.
