Source-sink flows in a rapidly rotating annulus
Abstract
The structure of the flow field induced by various source-sink geometries within a rapidly rotating annular region is examined. The flows which are examined are assumed axisymmetric and steady; solutions for the flow field within the centrifuge are calculated for the physical situation where the convective acceleration terms in the momentum equations and gravitational buoyancy effects are negligible. In addition to being of fundamental interest, the types of flows which are discussed have received much attention in recent years in connection with centrifuges; such machines are widely used in industry to separate binary mixtures.
