Analysis of nondestructive properties of injection molded polycarbonate: Fluid mechanics
Abstract
The relationships between the nondestructive properties of density, refractive index, and birefringence and injection velocity are analyzed for injection molded, 63.5 mm square by 2.54 mm thick, polycarbonate plaques. The equations of motion are developed for various cases assuming isothermal conditions in the rectangular plaque and its fan gate. Emphasis is placed on the equation for the velocity of a Newtonian fluid in a rectangular duct since the polycarbonate viscosity is independent of shear rate. From this, equations for average velocity and shear rate (through plaque thickness) are derived.
