Geology, fauna and palaeoenvironments of Lower Sivalik deposits around Ramnagar, India
Abstract
ALTHOUGH the Śivalik deposits of the Ramnagar basin (Jammu and Kashmir, India) have been known to palaeontologists and palaeoanthropologists for about 100 yr, little has been reported about the fauna, flora and palaeoenvironments of the region. Most reports centre round the primates1-2, and no attempt has been made to report the other vertebrates in detail. We surveyed the Ramnagar area during the field seasons of 1975-77, and catalogued more than 600 fossil specimens representing a diversity of mammals, reptiles and fish, recovered from several localities shown in Fig. 1. We report those finds here.
