Method of brittle strain-sensitive coatings

In the method discussed, strains and stresses in structural elements are determined from the behavior and pattern of the cracks which arise in thin brittle coatings. Research work on the development of novel brittle strain-sensitive coatings, including coatings with stable sensitivity characteristics, is reviewed. Data on the types and parameters of coatings under various test conditions, experimental procedures, and theory of the method are detailed to a degree sufficient for practical application of the method.
