The CYG loop as observed by ANS.
Abstract
X-ray brightness maps of the Cygnus Loop in the energy ranges from 0.16 to 0.284 keV, 0.32 to 0.46 keV, and 1 to 2.5 keV are presented which were derived from two observations with the ANS satellite. It is shown that the soft X-ray brightness distribution is similar in many respects to the optical and radio distributions, that two distinct X-ray maxima coincide with the radio maxima, and that an X-ray minimum is located in the region where the optical filaments are very narrow. It is concluded that the overall behavior of this supernova remnant may be best approximated by an X-ray temperature of about 2.5 million K, an explosion energy of roughly 1.2 x 10 to the 50th erg, a mean ambient interstellar density of about 0.16 per cu cm, an age of 20,000 plus or minus 4000 yr, and an integrated interstellar hydrogen column density of approximately 4.02 x 10 to the 20th atoms/sq cm.
