Life begins at forty - Microwave tubes
Abstract
The history of microwave tubes is reviewed from a philosophical viewpoint. Attention is given to the many discarded ideas, a few of which have been resurrected - in particular, cyclotron-resonance devices which include the first microwave tube and the gyrotron recently developed in the USSR. An interesting part of this historical assessment is an examination of roles of technical forecasting and management planning.
