The open cluster NGC 6383.
Abstract
The results are reported for UBV photoelectric photometry and photographic photometry of 88 stars as well as for spectroscopic observations of 16 stars in the region of the open cluster NGC 6383. Attention is given to interstellar reddening in the field, cluster membership, the cluster color-magnitude diagram, variable stars and interstellar gas in the region, and red stars in the field. Upper limits of about 5 million years for the cluster's age and about 4 million years for the contraction time are estimated. A comparison with three other clusters of similar age indicates that the stars below the lower main-sequence turnoff in NGC 6383 fall closer to the ZAMS, without a vacant region between the ZAMS and the bulk of the stars. It is suggested that the cluster core at least may be relatively deficient in less massive stars, and a relative lack of stars with a large UV excess in the cluster is noted.
