Studies of bipolar nebulae - V. The general phenomenon.
Abstract
Optical spectrophotometry, infrared photometry and radio continuum observations are combined to investigate the class of bipolar nebulae defined purely morphologically. The evolutionary status of these objects is considered. A few represent pre-main sequence objects; most seem to be proto-planetary nebulae; and a small number are evolved planetary nebulae.
