Transition in free shear layers
Abstract
Observations are presented for describing the stability and development of the shear layers of circular jets. The experiments have included quantitative flow visualization both in air and water. The results show that two sets of waves one axial one circumferential develop in the shear layer. The details of their development are strongly Reynolds number dependent below a critical value which is around 400 based on the local instantaneous shear layer width.
