Kinematic invariants of motion of a continuous medium in the special and general theories of relativity
Abstract
In the present paper, a complete rational basis is constructed for first-order scalar invariants associated with the first covariant derivative of the velocity vector, i.e., a basis of polynomial invariants of the principal kinematic tensors. This basis is shown to be functionally dependent. Syzygies for the basis are obtained.
