Moessbauer spectroscopic study of lunar soil collected by the Luna 24 automatic probe
Abstract
Moessbauer spectra of samples of lunar regolith taken from different parts of a column were obtained. The grain dimensions were in the range up to 0.074 and 0.094-0.200 mm. The spectra were of the same type, and pyroxene, olivine, metallic iron, ilmenite, and ulvospinel were identified. The amount of common and metallic iron decreases with column depth. A smaller amount of ilmenite (by a factor of about 2.5) and larger amount of olivine (by a factor of about 1.5-2) were found in regolith from the Sea of Crises as opposed to that from the Sea of Fertility. The mean ferruginosity of olivine from both seas was the same.
