Opaque minerals in the Jilin meteorite
Abstract
A list of opaque materials in the Jilin meteorite is presented, including: kamacite, taenite, troilite, chromite, ilmenite, schreibersite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, and graphite. Attention is given to optical and physical properties, chemical composition, relative abundance, and order of crystallization. Observations of the Ni-Fe phase lead to the conclusion that the opaque minerals have undergone different degrees of thermal and impact metamorphisms. It is noted that silicate minerals are the first to crystallize, followed by chromite and ilmenite at the early stage of nebular condensation. The Ni-Fe phase itself is considered to be of later origin. Troilite is said to result from the reaction of Ni-Fe metal with H2S vapor
