Possibility of establishing the existence of a valley from ionograms
Abstract
One of the factors which assures the possibility of long-range radio communication is the existence of a nonmonotonic segment or valley on the curve depicting the height dependence of electron density. The paper presents a method which uses group paths of o- and x-components above the E-region maximum to establish the existence of a valley, to estimate its minimum depth, and to determine the width of the frequency band suitable for solving the problem. The resolving power of the method is studied for different geomagnetic conditions.
