Theoretical prediction and observation of Bernstein mode radiation in a direction oblique to a magnetic field
Abstract
It is shown that the group velocity of electrostatic modes propagating quasi-perpendicularly in a warm magnetoplasma has a preferred direction at the Bernstein mode frequency maxima. Experiments show that the radiation can deviate from the perpendicular direction and even become quasi-parallel. The results contradict the hypothesis that the radiation related to the Bernstein modes is quasi-perpendicular to a static magnetic field.
