Optimal and conventional array processing
Abstract
As an aid to signal processing, criteria are derived to identify noise fields for which the optimal spatial processor performs much better than the conventional (beamform-square-integrate) detector. Both use a linear array, and the conditions under which the conventional processor performs nearly optimally are also determined. Noise fields are categorized by examining simple criteria stated in terms of parameters such as noise power, noise spatial spectral bandwidth, and array bandwidth.
