Surface photometry of elliptical galaxies.
Abstract
The paper presents photographic surface photometry for 16 giant elliptical galaxies and one S0. Results are presented as radial profiles along the direction halfway between the major and minor axes and as ellipticities as a function of radius. Similarities and differences among the radial profiles of the galaxies, selected from the Minkowski observing list, are described. Ellipticities decrease outward in some galaxies and increase outward in others. The techniques and the reliability of the photometry are discussed.
