Stark effect of the H-alpha fine structure
Abstract
The influence of electric fields on the fine structure of the H-alpha line was computed for field strengths between 100 V/cm and 10,000 V/cm. Schematic diagrams of the line splits, as well as tables calculated for 100, 500, and 1,000 to 10,000 (at intervals of 1,000) V/cm are presented. The theoretical basis of the calculation procedure is explained, and discrepancies at low electron densities between plasma electron density determinations based on the Stark effect and other measurements of the electron density are considered.
