Drag of circular cylinder under transverse rarefied gas flow
Abstract
A formula is presented giving the drag coefficient for low Re-number slip flow normal to the axis of an infinite circular cylinder. The equation is not confined to tangential accommodation coefficients of the order of unity. In contrast to the nonslip case a viscous normal stress acts across the cylinder surface. Under perfect slip the two normal stresses in common are even larger than under nonslip. For zeta = 1.0 the friction drag is already reduced to 15 % of its nonslip value.
