Diagnostic model of extratropical perturbation studies
Abstract
A multilevel diagnostic model developed for the study of the structure and behavior of the extratropical synoptic systems over the Southern Hemisphere is described, the vertical p-velocity is accounted for by using the quasi-geostrophic omega equation which includes the effect of latent heat release. Friction and orography contributions are also included in the model through a 1000 mb boundary condition. When applied to a synoptic system, quantitative information is given regarding the vertical velocity resulting from: (1) latent heat release; (2) thermal advection; (3) differential vorticity advection; (4) friction; and (5) orography.
