Future outlook for satellite-switched TDMA system
Abstract
For TDMA transmissions, the most efficient interconnectivity among beams of a satellite can be obtained by the satellite-switched TDMA (SS/TDMA) system. As a near future application of SS/TDMA system, this paper firstly describes the advantages of its application to a channelized satellite. With this application, transition from conventional FM/FDMA transmission to TDMA can be effectively performed by gradually activating the SS/TDMA switch matrix prepared in each frequency slot. An advanced SS/TDMA system will be realized by incorporating regenerative repeaters on board the satellite. With on board regeneration, the microwave switch matrix can be replaced with IC gates and the output TWT amplifiers may be replaced with microwave PSK modulators. Furthermore, more sophisticated processing such as re-multiplexing or forward error correction on board the satellite will become feasible.
